Controversial attempt by KPA, KRC and KMA to oblige percentage of import cargo via new SGR rail link between Mombasa and Nairobi

24-2-2018 15:16:16
With report of low utilisation of container cargo trips on the newly-inaugurated Single Gauge Railway link between Mombasa and Nairobi, the initial move to halve import transit tariffs to pay Sh15,000 ($150) to move a 20-foot container from Mombasa and Sh20,000 ($200) for a 40-foot container has failed to attract significant takers. So now the Kenya Railways corporation has written to the Kenya Ship Agents Association with the KPA and KMA stating "The purpose of this communication is to notify you that KPA will, with immediate effect, nominate the above referenced cargo to the ICD-Nairobi to meet the daily capacity for SGR as may be advised by KR from time to time.”
